Teenage Kid Turns $620 into $325,000 in Less Than a Year

by manatee on August 16, 2008

Earlier I wrote an article titled How to Make Money Buying and Selling Domain Names.  I’d like to expand on that a little bit with an article I recently found on Forbes called Flipping For Domains.  The story tells how Steven McDonald, a teenage kid from Connecticut started flipping domains in September 2007.  He started with the domain qsd.com he bought for $620.  He turned around and sold that name for $12,000.  After that he simply repeated the process and now is over a quarter of a million dollars richer.

Am I the only one here that feels stupid?

Well, this is the kick in the pants I needed to get focused on this.  I have some 89 domain names, and a bunch of them I’ve been thinking about selling.  No more thinking… time to start flipping!  I’ve had some success with this in the past, so I’m going to seriously consider putting a large portion of my time into this.

I’ve just listed EarthMall.com for $10,000 on Sedo.com.  Anyone care to buy?  :)

I’m going to make a complete list of places where YOU can buy domain names and try to cash in as well.  Subscribe to my blog feed and stay tuned!

How to Make Money Buying and Selling Domain Names

by manatee on July 31, 2008

Most people with even a little bit of experience on the web know that a nice profit can be made with a good domain name.  There are numerous stories where a lucky individual got in at the right time and bought a good generic domain name (for around $100 in the early 1990’s) and sold it later for millions.  One example of this is a 43 year old man from Maryland that sold Pizza.com for $2.6 million.

For the most part, the really good domains have already been taken.  Or have they?  Two years ago I bought a very nice keyword niche domain for a measly $250.  I turned the domain into a blog, worked on it for about 2 1/2 years and sold it for $10,000.  Not a bad profit for blogging about something I enjoyed.  I’m still shocked that I only had to shell out $250 for this nice domain.  Did I get lucky or was the timing just right?  Maybe it was a little bit of both.
