How to Fix Backyard Flooding

It’s Spring which means lots of rain… and for me it means back yard flooding. Our idiot neighbors behind us have yards that are literally about a FOOT higher than our ground level. This is causing all of their water to drain into our yard. I’m going to try a few things to hopefully fix this problem. If all fails I guess I’ll contact the city and see if there is some way to get the neighbors to fix their yard so it doesn’t drain into ours.

So about half of our yard has standing water at least 2 inches deep after a good rain. It will go away after a couple days, but definitely causes mosquito problems and basically destroys the yard.

The bought a water pump at Lowe’s earlier tonight and did a test run and successfully drained some water in the front yard…. and into the street. But… it was slow. Probably need to get a shorter garden hose and just drain directly into the kitchen sink. If it is too slow I think I’ll take the pump back and try a wet vac.

Pump I bought was a Water Ace Multi-Purpose/In-Line pump.. 1/12 HP and can pump 350 gallons per hour. I will admit I kind of feel like a chump for buying it. But I also feel kind of cool. I probably should have bought a wet vac and rigged it to pump out. Ah well. Put it on the credit card and maybe I’ll get a government bailout down the road.

So, the next thing I’m going to do is buy something to build a wall to keep water out of our yard. Got a rough idea in my head, but still not sure. Maybe the best thing to do would be to buy a big truckload of dirt.

All for now, stay continued for more on this and hopefully I’ll get this figured out. The best solution hopefully will involve getting the water to flood our crappy neighbor’s yards. Then maybe they will move.
