In this post, you will learn how you can create a channel for people that have Roku streaming video players all around the world. This post will show you how to create a private Roku channel as well as a channel that can be seen in the Roku Channel Store.

Ok, so the first place you will want to go is the Roku Developer section of the Roku web site. You will need to create an account (free) to log into the developer site. Once you are there, you can download the Roku SDK and Adobe templates, manage/add your channels, talk to other people in the developer forum and more.

Here is a 10 step method to creating your first Roku channel.  You can create private channels, public channels or pay channels.  After you sign up and download the SDK, download and study this developer guide.

Are you the proud owner of a Roku streaming digital video player?  Are you frustrated trying to figure out how to watch YouTube videos on your Roku?

Look no further… as I’ve discovered a solution to let you do just that and works to this date (as this blog post is published).

The solution is a little flaky though.  You will need to install the channel titled RateRix from the Channel Store.  Once you do that you will need to register an account at RateRix.com and go through the usual steps by entering a code that your Roku player will provide.

There are some glitches in the private channel you need to install to watch YouTube, but it does work.  Glitches I have found so far are – you can only search for a single word – if you try to do more than one word you will get an empty error.

Videos that don’t seem to work are likely ones that have been removed from YouTube due to copyright violations.  The other error I found was it seems like when I create a Raterix account, the login fails the day after I create it.  Not sure what’s going on with that.  So, you might have to create a new Raterix account every day to watch YouTube videos.  Oh, and it also doesn’t seem to “remember” the login and password, so you have to enter that each time you want to use it.

But, beggars can’t be choosers, right?  At least it is a solution for watching YouTube on a Roku.  A few months ago they actually had an authentic YouTube channel that was in beta mode.   You could enter this private key - B8VVK and start watching.  Google then blocked that and everyone was out of luck.

I’m not sure why YouTube doesn’t want people to watch videos on a Roku, but suspect it is because no ads are shown…. so there’s nothing in it for them financially.
