How to Make Movie Theater Style Popcorn at Home

Lately I’ve been getting into popping popcorn.  I use to work at a movie theater and made popcorn every night.  I never thought about it much back then, but after getting tired of eating microwave popcorn, I decided to do a little research and have pretty much perfected the formula at home.

One of the key ingredients is coconut oil.  You can use plain coconut oil, but I recommend buying the industrial version that also gives popcorn that famous yellow color.   The next key ingredient is Flavacol.  The name alone makes my mouth water.

You will also need a stove top popcorn popper.  I lucked out and found one at a garage sale for $2.  But, you can buy one online for about $25 or so.

I haven’t done enough research to find out what brand of popcorn kernel is the best, so I will have to add that info later.  Right now I’m using Orville Redenbacher and it tastes fine, but I do want to try buying the same kind the movie theaters buy.

I also need to figure out the right proportions for each batch – how much coconut oil, Flavacol and popcorn kernels do you need?  I kind of eyeball it and it works fine… but then again I worked at a movie theater.

If you want to get started and get all of your supplies in one place, go to Popcorn Supply Company.  You can buy a starter kit or even full size machines.  You can also buy everything else you need including butter if you want melted butter on top, popcorn bags and tubs and of course the magical coconut oil and Flavacol salt.

The next time you have friends or family over for a movie you will blow their mind when you bring out a nice batch of real movie theater popcorn.  Do yourself a favor and ditch the microwave stuff.  Once you try this, you’ll never go back.
