How to Find Popular Web Sites

Ok, I’ve about had it with the Internet.  I feel like I’m beating a dead horse.  If anyone tries to tell you it’s easy to make money online, they are lying.  Especially if they are trying to sell you an eBook for $97.00.  By the way, think about it… how do they come up with the price of $97.00 for an eBook?!  What a rip-off!

Anyway, I’m going to take a few days and take a break from slaving away on web sites and try to come up with a list of resources to help myself and others find popular web sites.  More than likely – if you want to make money online you will want to make a site that is like something that already exists.  Or… put a new twist on an existing site.  Find stuff wrong with it and make improvements.  The new, improved site can be the one YOU build to put the popular one out of business.

Then…. you get to live on the beach!

Well, maybe not.  But anyway here are some techniques on how to find popular web sites that you can clone or borrow ideas from.  Ideas are in no particular order.

Alexa Top Sites – This is a great place to start.  See the top 500 global sites or narrow down by country or category.  This is a great way to find popular sites you may have never heard of before.  Search for topics and when you find a site that looks interesting try going to “related links” to see similar sites.

StumbleUpon – An awesome toolbar you can download.  Click the stumble button and it takes you to a random web site in areas that interest you.

Google Adwords Placement Tool – If you have a Google Adwords account, click on the “Reporting and Tools” menu and select “Placement Tool”.  Then on the left site you can select broad categories and narrow them down to show specific web sites on the main screen.  Sort those sites by impressions per day to get an idea for sites that are doing well.  The impressions aren’t totally accurate, but should give you a ball park idea.  Visit sites you are interested in and see how active the site is.  Has it been updated recently or has it been a few years?  A profitable site will be updated frequently more than likely.  Does it get a lot of comments?

Compete.com – Another awesome site.  Enter in a URL and it will give estimated traffic stats for the site.  You can see competing web sites on the left under “Competitive Rank”.  I just entered a site I found on the previously mentioned Google Adwords Placement Tool and found this cool product… a genius idea if I may say so.  Test drive tattoos before you make them permanent.  Hmm… time to check GoDaddy to see if a similar keyword domain is available ;)

Ok, that’s all my brain can handle for now.  I’ll add more tips soon!

Ok, I’m back.  Here are some more:

Delicious.com – A social bookmarking site is making a comeback.  Keep an eye on it for possible popular sites to clone.

Digg.com – I dunno about this site anymore.  It use to be cool and a good source, but questionable now.  I’ll put it on the list anyway.

Twitter Search – Keep an eye out for popular retweeted sites and trends.

Google Trends – Find the latest trending items searched for in Google.

Google Insights for Search – An awesome way to find keywords that are being searched for.   You can narrow down to categories/niches and location.  Great for coming up with ideas for local web sites.

Domain-Daily – Find out what domain names have been registered today or by date.  There’s at least one better site than this out there that is more accurate.  I will try to find it and post it soon.  Oh, here’s another one for now – TasteReports.com.

Found a couple more gems – Traffic Estimate and Netcraft Top Sites.  Most of these seem to be pretty much the same.  The rankings are different, but should give you an overall ballpark idea.

Oh, here’s another – DoubleClick Ad Planner by Google.  Check out their list of top 1,000 web sites and find similar competing sites when you click on the stats for each site.

October 11, 2011 UPDATE!  :)

Howdy… ok, found a couple more sites to play around with to see popular web sites.  I forgot about this one.  It’s called The Truth Laid Bear.  Click on different categories on the right and  you can see several thousand web sites sorted by popularity.

I’ve been working on a web site I’m calling Start Frog.  It’s not even close to being finished by you can take a peek if you like.  I’m building a start page for myself, but perhaps one day others will be able to use it, create their own start page, etc.

Here’s another place where you can find popular web sites.  Visit Blog Ads “buy ads” section.  You can then browse by category or search by keyword.  Get a rough idea of traffic and how much that site is making from ads.  If they have a lot of spots filled up and are charging a lot, then you can assume that is a good niche to get into.

Here’s another one – Technorati Top 100 Blogs and many thousands of other blogs in their Blog Directory.

Money Making Workout Program

Thinking of trying a super simple technique for raising moola.  Start with a small goal like $100.  Then set a goal to make an extra $100 in one week.  Keep doing this and increase the amount of money and eventually do it over a monthly time frame or something….

So it would sorta be like lifting weights.  Keep increasing the weights (money goal) and you get stronger (richer).

And after awhile you’d have a sort of swiss army knife of techniques to make money… and might find a good niche eventually?

I’m gonna give it a shot and see what happens.  So I’m officially starting this today, August 22, 2011 at 2:33 P.M.  So, I need to make an extra $100 by next week August 29, 2011 at the same time.  There are no rules… except to make $100 extra any way possible.

Update… just found this interesting article: 25 (Unusual) Ways to Make Quick Money

Update!  I just made my first $1.00.  I logged into Microworkers.com and did a few BS jobs.  It’s really kind of a slimy place though.  Whether I see the money is another story.  I’m going to count it towards my $100 goal though.  LOL.  Only $99 to go.

Update!  Ok, I’m going to retract my above statement.  I’m back to $100.  Microworkers sucks big time.  They don’t pay out via PayPal and use a couple of shady payment services… which means you will likely never get paid.  Also, there’s a minimum payment threshold you have to reach before you get paid.  It’s likely you will get burnt out before you reach that level … so basically you are then slaving away for nothing.  Don’t waste your time with Microworkers.com.

So I’m doing an experiment with eBay – basically selling something that I can buy on another site (that I think is underpriced).  Many times people will buy stuff on eBay without researching to see if there’s a better deal out there.  I know this for a fact as I’ve sold a bunch of stuff this way.  Maybe this is the ticket?  Sell stuff I don’t have… and/or sell stuff other people sell (cheaply) and be the middle man and take a piece of the action.  I won’t give away this niche … but maybe I will if it fails.  So my eBay listing is supposed to cost 80 cents, so now I’ve got $100.80 to go to reach my goal.

Making money is a bitch in this sucky economy!

Update… so far my brilliant eBay auction is a total flop.  60 something views and not a bite.  Man people are cheap these days.  Maybe because everyone is broke?

Well anyway I’m going to do some research on how to find hot selling items to sell on eBay.  Found this article which has a few good pointers: Top 10 Sites to Find The Hot Selling Items on eBay.

Update... still nothing.  Another shitty day on the Internet.  There’s simply too much noise out there… everyone’s talking but nobody’s listening.  I have another random idea in my head to get web traffic.  A sort of link bait idea I’ll give a try.

One thing’s for sure it’s nearly impossible to start any kind of business when you have a baby.  There’s simply no damn time to do anything.

I hope some asshole buys what I put up on eBay.

Update… Ok, I’m starting to think I shot too high with my $100 in one week goal.  LOL.  I think it would be better to start with a really small goal.  $5, $10 or $25 and build from there.  My main problem is I can’t get shit done in the day because I have to watch da baby.  Another problem is it seems everything in the world is over saturated and everyone is too cheap to buy shit.

But, I’m going to keep trying.  I think I will make a little motivating sign or something to help me out with my goal.  Something that says I will make an extra $100 by August 29, 2011.  Read it once in the morning, and once at night before bed.  This is an old Think and Grow Rich Napoleon Hill trick.

I also need to start a list of SPECIFIC TECHNIQUES / ideas, etc. I can use to make money.  Something I can refer to any time I need to make money.  This has given me another idea I may work on in the near future….

Update… (9/10/11) – Well, that was a massive failure!  Man I’m depressed and feel screwed as ever.  Feels like the Internet is simply over saturated.  Too many people trying to make money… and everything is saturated.

I did have one tiny piece of luck though.  I made $5 (which I’ll probably never see) from Fiverr.com.  I got a creepy ass clown and made a video for someone.  It’s a pretty cool site and great concept.  But, at $5 a pop I can’t imagine anyone is making a living off the site.  You need a great idea and/or you need to be talented as a mo-fo.

So now I’m thinking about focusing on affiliate marketing for a little while and see if I can make some money.  Affiliate marketing is SUPER over saturated, but perhaps with some clever tactics I can squeeze 50 cents or so out of the Internet.  Should I buy a separate domain and document my progress?  Hmm.. maybe.  Let me think about it for awhile…

Teenage Kid Turns $620 into $325,000 in Less Than a Year

Earlier I wrote an article titled How to Make Money Buying and Selling Domain Names.  I’d like to expand on that a little bit with an article I recently found on Forbes called Flipping For Domains.  The story tells how Steven McDonald, a teenage kid from Connecticut started flipping domains in September 2007.  He started with the domain qsd.com he bought for $620.  He turned around and sold that name for $12,000.  After that he simply repeated the process and now is over a quarter of a million dollars richer.

Am I the only one here that feels stupid?

Well, this is the kick in the pants I needed to get focused on this.  I have some 89 domain names, and a bunch of them I’ve been thinking about selling.  No more thinking… time to start flipping!  I’ve had some success with this in the past, so I’m going to seriously consider putting a large portion of my time into this.

I’ve just listed EarthMall.com for $10,000 on Sedo.com.  Anyone care to buy?  :)

I’m going to make a complete list of places where YOU can buy domain names and try to cash in as well.  Subscribe to my blog feed and stay tuned!

How to Make Money Buying and Selling Domain Names

Most people with even a little bit of experience on the web know that a nice profit can be made with a good domain name.  There are numerous stories where a lucky individual got in at the right time and bought a good generic domain name (for around $100 in the early 1990′s) and sold it later for millions.  One example of this is a 43 year old man from Maryland that sold Pizza.com for $2.6 million.

For the most part, the really good domains have already been taken.  Or have they?  Two years ago I bought a very nice keyword niche domain for a measly $250.  I turned the domain into a blog, worked on it for about 2 1/2 years and sold it for $10,000.  Not a bad profit for blogging about something I enjoyed.  I’m still shocked that I only had to shell out $250 for this nice domain.  Did I get lucky or was the timing just right?  Maybe it was a little bit of both.

Create Ebooks with eBook Pro – the Best eBook Creator on the Market

ebook-pro.gifIf you’ve ever thought about writing an eBook and don’t know where to begin, I can recommend from experience eBook Pro for you to compile/create your ebook. Most eBook compiler/creator software will make your ebook for you, but few protect your work from being stolen like eBook Pro does. With eBook Pro they allow you to create usernames and passwords that are stored on a remote server requiring anyone reading an ebook to enter this username and password in before reading the ebook. You can limit the number of readers per ebook or if you aren’t worried about protecting your work you can allow unlimited readers to read it.

I’ve noticed a lot of people use Adobe Acrobat to create and distribute their ebooks, but think this is a bad idea as it is easy to distribute a PDF file once it is out on the web. If an ebook created with eBook Pro gets in distribution it doesn’t matter as someone trying to steal a copy won’t be able to read it. If you are already selling ebooks and concerned about theft, you should definitely get Ebook Pro software. It is WELL worth the money.

If you notice suspicious activity with an ebook password that you sent out, you can deactivate that username and password remotely.  You can even collect contact information from your readers.  So, whether you want to make money selling ebooks or give away a free ebook as a viral marketing tool, eBook Pro is the way to go!  For more information, visit the eBook Pro web site.

17 Year Old Girl Makes $70,000/Month Giving Away Free Myspace Layouts

ashbo1.jpgI was browsing around the Digital Point forums the other day and ran across this thread titled Girl Make $70,000 Month With Free Myspace Layouts. Catchy title, I must say. The thread then pointed to an article on Fast Company titled Girl Power. After reading through half of the article, I had to stop and email it to some friends and join in on the forum discussion. How is it possible that a 17 year old girl could be making so much moola? I’ve been working on the web for over 10 years and haven’t even come close to this level of success.

The girl who makes this obscene amount of cash is Ashley Qualls, and her site is Whateverlife.com. Apparantly she has been obsessed with computers/web design since she was 9 years old. So we have our first clue to the secret of her success – passion and a true love for what she was doing. But, what else contributed to her success? Or…was it all just dumb luck?

I took a look at her site and used one of her layouts on my Myspace account that I never use. The key thing I noticed is she links and/or plugs Whateverlife.com on each of the free layouts she gives away. During the time frame that Myspace was peaking, this probably created a viral effect for her site. More than likely her layouts got featured on an army of Myspace profiles and that number must have grown at an exponential rate.

She eventually ran into problems and couldn’t afford her web hosting bill. Luckily for Ashley, her host suggested she put Google Adsense ads on her site. Amazingly, her first check was $2,790. This must have provided a nice motivator to make even more layouts and further grow her empire. She now makes as much as $70,000/month and was recently offered $1.5 million, which she turned down. I think this was a mistake as it is quite obvious that Myspace is going down the tubes. I think she should have taken the money and started a new venture with a fresh, clean slate.

whateverlife.jpg

Anyway, I’m very fascinated by this story and had to write about it to hopefully gain some insight as to why her site is so successful. What have I learned so far? First thing is that maybe it is a good idea to capitalize on an existing success. Myspace was hugely successful, but is now fading fast as everyone moves to Facebook. What is hugely successful right now that you can create a product or service for? Hmm…perhaps the iPhone? Facebook?

Since she included her web site URL in her layouts, this created a viral effect allowing her traffic to grow exponentially. So it’s probably a good idea to add some kind of viral component to whatever product or service you are trying to sell. Of course, if you are giving away something for free this definitely helps. Everyone loves a free product. Let’s throw that in as an ingredient to her success.

Overall it seems that if you can provide something to the public for free and include some kind of viral component you can eventually build an audience that will hopefully grow at an exponential rate. If you can get enough traffic to your site you should have no problem converting that into advertising dollars.

Sound simple? Murphy’s Law will ensure that if you TRY to become successful using some kind of formula, you will probably fail. So, you’re probably better off just following your passions and hope for the best. I’m sure if Ashley reads this, she must be laughing. So, Ashley… or anyone else out there that has a clue – please leave a comment and tell us what the secret is! I’m outta here….

Recipe for the Perfect Internet Money Making Idea

moan-my-ip1.jpgI was listening to one of my favorite podcasts today, called net@nite, starring Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur, and during the podcast they mentioned a funny web site/service called MoanMyIP.com. MoanMyIP.com doesn’t just display your IP address like other web sites… it moans it to you thanks to the sexy voice of someone they hired – or perhaps their girlfriend?

Leo mentioned that he thought this may be the brainchild of the guy who created IPChicken.com, but, after doing a bit of research, I think it may be someone else.  Leo speculated that IPChicken.com has made hundreds of thousands of dollars… and it wouldn’t surprise me if his estimates were true considering the popularity of the site.

A quick search of MoanMyIP.com revealed dozens of blog and forum posts plugging the site indicating that the site is experiencing the viral effect – at least among us geeks. Check out the Alexa graph of its popularity:alexa.jpg

I can hear the moans and groans already… Alexa, shemexa. Yeah, you can take their stats with a grain of salt, but at least they do provide a general indicator of a web sites popularity. So, what am I trying to get at? I’m curious what it takes to make a stupidly simple and profitable web site such as this. There are hundreds of super complicated Web 2.0 services out there…many which may be less profitable than this super simple one. MoanMyIP.com isn’t the only silly money making idea.  Other legendary sites include The Million Dollar Homepage, SantaMail, AntennaBalls, and more.

Here are a few ingredients I think are necessary to make a super simple profitable web site:

1) Be First – Alex Tew was the first person on the Internet to sell pixels for $1 each on The Million Dollar Homepage. The first person will get the most attention and will ultimately win. Hundreds of copycats followed, but his site was the only one to make a million.

2) Modify a Known Success – If you can’t be first with a great idea, put a twist on an existing successful idea. MoanMyIP.com did this by using a sexy voice to speak your IP address instead of displaying it. I repeat – modify a known success.

3) Don’t be Boring – We are all like monkeys.  Throw a shiny new object to us and we will all drop what we are doing and gravitate to the latest thing.  Think objectively…does your idea really grab your attention or are you deluding yourself?  Does it excite the hell out of you?  What kind of energy does it give you?  Why is the iPhone successful?  Because it is the latest “shiny object” to entertain us monkeys.

4) Would You Tell Others About It – What kind of sites, videos, pictures, etc. motivate you to tell others about them?  Is your idea good enough that you would forward it around, write a blog post about it or mention it in your favorite forum?  What bores you to tears and what doesn’t?

5)  Improve the Quality of the Buyers Life – Now I’m just blowing stuff out my a-hole..but seriously, I guess a great idea has to improve the quality of the buyer’s life in some way…shape…or form.  The Million Dollar Homepage improved lives by (hopefully) providing traffic to anyone who bought an ad – which gave them more sales.  SantaMail gives kids the excitement of getting a letter from Santa.  AntennaBalls helps you find your car faster.  How does your product or service improve the quality of a persons life?

Well, that’s about all I can write about at this point.  I’ve had about four margaritas and need to go to sleep soon.  But, I hope this might perk up a few entrepreneur minds out there and maybe they will post a comment to add their thoughts on this subject.  Yes?  Go ahead… please leave a comment, plug your blog or web site and continue the discussion.  If we all work together, maybe we can once and for all discover the secret to creating exciting, fun, super simple, useful and profitable ideas like MoanMyIP.com…and most importantly, cash in.

Million Dollar Wiki

million-dollar-wiki.jpgI was reading through my favorite blogs this morning when I stumbled upon this article by John Chow on the Million Dollar Wiki, which is similar to Alex Tew’s Million Dollar Homepage, except you get a full page for $100 instead of a tiny 10×10 pixel.

When I read his article this morning, 158 pages had been sold giving this 21 year old college student an extra $15,800 in the bank.  As I write this he is now up to 220 pages sold bringing his total up to $22,000!  WTF?!

Honestly I’m a little peeved, but can only be peeved at myself for not thinking of this first.  Just goes to show you it pays off to take some time off and do some creative thinking/brainstorming from time to time.  If you can’t be first, create a new category.  It is too late to do pixels…it’s been done.  You have to put a new twist on an existing idea to have a chance.

I put a twist on the Million Dollar Homepage by selling pixels for a penny instead of a dollar.  The Million Penny Homepage was born and worked very well… I even sold over a million pixels, somewhere in the range of $12K- $13K.

I wonder what new twist can be put on the Million Dollar _______ idea?  Million Penny Wiki?  What will be next?  I have one idea in mind, but will not tell.  One thing for sure, I’m going to spend a full day every now and then to do nothing but brainstorm a way to create and cash in on an internet fad like this.

It will be interesting to see how well this does.  I have a feeling he will make a million or at least make $100K.  It may be pretty hard to get the press that Alex Tew did, as his idea was PURE GENIUS!  The Million Dollar Wiki is a good idea, but is not truly original.  But, who cares… a few thousand bucks is still a few thousand bucks!  To be continued…
